Narcissistic Abuse & Codependency

What is a Narcissistic Behavior?

Generally, narcissistic, abusive people and codependents feed on each other’s needs and desires, making both miserable in the process. People with codependency sometimes form relationships with narcissists and they develop complementary roles.

Narcissistic personality disorder — one of several types of personality disorders — is a mental condition in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance, a deep need for excessive attention and admiration, troubled relationships, and a lack of empathy for others.

So how do you know if you are one…or married one?

Here are 12 traits that describe narcissistic behavior:

  1. They think highly of themselves – big ego
  2. They possess an insatiable need for admiration, compliments
  3. They can be very superficial and exploitive in the relationship
  4. Very controlling
  5. Easily threatened
  6. Lack empathy
  7. Difficulty with attachment
  8. Extreme vulnerability to life transitions
  9. Irresponsible
  10. Knows no boundaries
  11. Fear of being rejected
  12. Sense of self is fragile

Additionally, when narcissists don’t get their way, even if what they want is unreasonable, it causes a trigger.  Criticism, even if it’s constructive or said kindly, is perceived to be negative.  Being the center of attention is the narcissist’s goal.  When they are caught breaking the rules, they resent it.  They do not respect others.

Furthermore, It’s important to consider that healthy relationships require mutual respect.  Trust, vulnerability, and communication are key components to any partnership.  If you or someone you love is struggling with narcissistic behavior, contact our office to schedule a telehealth visit with Jolyn.
