Anxiety and depression. We are hearing more about each, especially post Covid 19. These seem like general terms, when in fact they are very different. Anxiety and depression are types of mood disorders. Anxiety creates feelings of nervousness, worry, or dread. Although the two conditions are different, you can have both at the same time. Among other things, depression causes feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and reduced energy. Treatment for each can vary.
Did you know that childhood trauma can cause either or both of these disorders? Severe experiences at any stage in life, whether it be childhood, adolescence or adulthood are a common trigger, and impact mental health. Experiencing childhood trauma is likely to have a particularly big impact. Experiences such as physical or emotional abuse can result in anxiety for many years down the road.
There are a class of medications that have a broad therapeutic range. They can be used to treat anxiety disorders, depression, or, in some cases, both at the same time. There are other modalities to consider such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing or EMDR. EMDR therapy is an effective treatment option for people suffering from anxiety, panic, PTSD, or trauma. It is known as a way to get “past your past.”
