Covid Fatigue. Have you heard? It’s a thing. Studies show that nearly half of Americans say the coronavirus crisis is harming their mental health*. For some, the fear of extended social distancing leaves them feeling lonely. Others are stressed about their health, employment, school and childcare. Isolation from friends, family, coworkers, classmates has taken its toll.
What is Covid Fatigue?
Some symptoms are similar to those caused by chronic fatigue syndrome. Also, symptoms mirror other chronic illnesses that develop after infections. Chronic fatigue syndrome involves extreme fatigue that worsens with physical or mental activity. Chronic fatigue doesn’t improve with rest. Additionally, it typically lasts for 2-3 weeks after the infection. However, some people may experience fatigue for 12 weeks or more after the infection is gone.
Furthermore, nearly two years later, we’re seeing Covid patients developing psychological problems. These include brain fog, where they feel like their head is clouded, making it difficult to concentrate, do math calculations or make decisions. Other mental health symptoms long COVID-19 patients are experiencing include depression and anxiety.
